Lolo Jones – Running for God’s Gold
The summer Olympics in London are only 32 days away. I am a huge fan of the summer Olympics and not so much the winter ones primarily I guess because I ran track and cross-country in high school. So I thought it would be appropriate to find outspoken Christians for my blog.
Lolo Jones a track star and Olympian will turn 30 while she is in London competing for a gold medal in the 100m hurdles. In Bejing she had a certain gold medal in hand when she tripped over the 9th hurdle and didn’t medal. Since then she has undergone spinal surgery to fix a problem she had where she couldn’t feel her feet so her brain couldn’t compute where they were so that led to the trip over the 9th hurdle.
This should be the headline and her hard childhood but that isn’t what the media is sinking its teeth into. Lolo Jones is a devout Christian and a virgin. In a culture where a beautiful 29 year old woman is still a virgin, she is considered a freak. It doesn’t matter her accomplishments on and off the track, the media is more interested in the sex life of Lolo Jones.
Lolo Jones though embraces the attention that her Christianity brings. She can be seen praying often before a race, reads the Bible and talks openly about her Christianity and relationship with God in the locker room. Jones admits thought that remaining a virgin has been the toughest thing she has ever done in her life. “It’s just something, a gift that I want to give to my husband,” Jones said. “But please, understand, this journey has been hard.” “If there’s virgins out there, I’m going to let them know, it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life — harder than training for the Olympics, harder than graduating from college, has been to stay a virgin before marriage.” (Des Moines Register)
Lolo’s Tweets and Facebook are filled with posts praising God for all to read. Recent posts include “Fear is a sin because it is the forgetfulness of God. If you fear something you place that above God and forget God’s ability to take care of you.” and after qualifying for the Olympics “Wow! Nothing is impossible with God! Honored to represent The United States at the 2012 London Olympics”. Facebook Twitter Christianity is a vital part of her life.
After the Olympics Lolo says she can get back to finding the right man. When asked on Twitter what she’s looking for, Jones listed four basic attributes: “single, Christian, non smoker, no kids with any baby mamas, have a job.” (Washington Post)
Lolo Jones is an awesome role model and example for all women out there and someone to learn from even for men about maintaining your virginity. She is also a shining example of a Christian woman holding her ground against not only the culture we live in but also the rebuke she recieves from the media for standing up for her Christian beliefs.
And before anyone can say BUT….due to her ESPN Body Issue photoshoot in 2009 where she was wearing no clothes. Lolo struggled with whether she should participate in the photoshoot because it made her “uncomfortable” and didn’t want it to have a sexual aspect due to her Christian morals. She was happy with the results and said it, “was very cool where you could see how hard I worked for those muscles.” Nothing private was showing in the photos and as she said you will find more showing in art museums and it is considered art.
Lolo Jones is using the gifts and position God has given her to exalt his name and how requires us to act as Christians as an example to the world. She is a Fisherman for God.
